トーベ＝ヤンソン氏原作の「たのしいムーミン一家」、美しい自然の中にある
「ムーミン谷」を舞台にして、スナフキンやニョロニョロたちと繰り広げる
和やかな日常を書いた名作である。

だが、このムーミン一家の住むムーミン谷には恐ろしい秘密があった。

実はこのムーミン一家の物語は世界を巻き込んだ核戦争の後を描いたものであり、既に人類は死滅。
ムーミントロールという妖精だと思われていたムーミン一家の正体は、
突然変異のミュータントであり、おてんばのミーは両親を戦争で殺されたショックで年を取らなくなりました。
そしてスナフキンは退役軍人であり、作中でよく旅をしているのは、はぐれてしまった軍隊を見つけるためなのです。
スナフキンがなんだか世捨て人のような雰囲気を出しているのはこれが原因で、
彼はもう隊と合流するのをあきらめつつも、人類全員の墓守としても生きてゆかなければならない
自分に思い悩んで哲学的なことを良く口走ります。
そして最終回で雪が降ってきて、全員が冬眠に入り物語が終わるのは、
核戦争の影響で訪れる核の冬をあらわしていて、全ての登場人物が死んでいく様子を表しているのです。
